Lifestyle choices impact a lot of different people, regardless of age, and it will have a lasting impact on students in school as well. It’s about what exactly will become a problem in the future and what can be done to remedy a solution. For some children they need to have a vigorous routine, which makes addiction to something very easy, or they need to have an escape, where bad behaviour can thrive.
In this guide from a Sixth Form college in Hertfordshire, we take a look at some of the key lifestyle choices we see in children and how they can affect their education.
Your child’s sleeping habits
Depending on your child’s age it might be easier to get to sleep than other stages in life. When your child is a teenager and wants to play video games all night, that’s another story. Moments like these can become a concern for parents, especially when a child doesn’t get enough sleep and becomes irritable. Over time if this continues it can make moods worsen and translate into a poorer performance in school.
Digital device usage
In this modern era we often see children glued to tablets and smartphones, which will only continue to change as this form of technology becomes more accessible. Have a look at how much your child is using their phones, or smart tablets to assess how they react to the content they’re viewing on a regular basis. Not only does it set a bad precedent at times, with unrealistic standards on society and more, but it can become addictive very quickly.
This doesn’t mean to say that all digital device use is bad, just in moderation. Using too many devices can cause issues with eyesight and prolonged headaches, due to the blue light emitted from them. In a school setting, digital devices can become a problem if your child has developed an addiction, or is uninterested in their studies as a result.
Diet and exercise
Eating junk food and not exercising can become a problem over time, and it’s important that children know the benefits of eating healthy and explore physical activities. Thankfully there is a lot of good help and support in schools these days, which will promote a healthy lifestyle for children to follow.
Following a poor diet can make children less attentive, not interested in school, sleepy and irritable across the day. It can also cause life-changing health issues if it is not curbed quickly.
Lifestyle changes affect us all in many ways, but educating our children on how to follow good lifestyle habits can help them not only in school but in leading a warm and healthy life.
